Only inventors, registered patent attorneys and agents are eligible to file patents with the USPTO.  Therefore, as the inventor, you do not need to utilize a patent attorney to file your patent.  However, utilizing the services of a patent attorney is highly advisable.

The level of protection a patent provides your invention is directly correlated to the verbiage of the claims in your patent application.  Claiming a patent too broadly will lead to a rejection by the USPTO, and claiming a patent to narrowly could lead to a patent that is commercially worthless.  Patent attorneys have been trained and certified by the USPTO to possess the knowledge necessary to properly draft claims before the USPTO.  Therefore, you can feel secure that a patent application drafted by a registered patent attorney will provide you with the invention protection that you expect
